José Martínez is Professor Agregat (Associate Professor) at the University of Barcelona. He works with the research group Logos at the Barcelona Institute of Analytic Philosophy (BIAP). His primary research interests are in philosophical logic, with a focus on theories of truth, the liar paradox and many-valued logics. Other topics of interest are philosophy of language and the meaning of life. He studied Philosophy and Mathematics at the University of Valencia, where he got his Ph.D. in Philosophy (1999). After two years as a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh (2001-2003), he has been a member of the University of Barcelona since 2003.
Virtous vs. vicious circles
When defining or explaining concepts, circularity is usually considered a bad feature that renders the analysis useless. However, it is also unavoidable in some contexts. We will talk about what can we learn from circularity and about the characteristics that differentiate vicious from virtuous circles of definitions or explanations.
