A Night of Philosophy returns to New York. A Night of Philosophy is an event of a new genre. It blurs boundaries between domains. Between times. It gathers academic philosophers, artists and the general public for 12 hours of happenings, ranging from philosophy lectures to artistic performances, from theatre to art videos, from dance to songs, from DJ sets to reading performances. A championship for meaning. Or an invitation to enjoy the suspended time of a whole night. The prefiguration of a brilliant future where nightlife and philosophy, everyday life and art, can merge.
From 7pm to 7am, next October 5, 2019, philosophy will occupy the Alvin Johnson/J.M. Kaplan Hall and the Eugene Lang building to celebrate The New School’s 100thanniversary.
You will roam free throughout the remarkable settings of the historical building of The New School and the Eugene Lang building, the café opened all night and the Vera List courtyard with trees and art.
On your way from the Auditorium to the café, from the Baldwin Reading Room to the Amphitheater 407, you will be able to look at some of the 62 works of art on display from the exceptional Art Collection of The New School. This collection offers The New School’s students and faculty a rare opportunity to engage with art on a daily basis. The event of A Night of Philosophyat The New School opens up this experience to the greater community.
You will attend exceptional talks by philosophers including Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Jay Bernstein, Christia Mercer, Charles Mills, Drucilla Cornell, cinzia Arruzza, Markus Gabriel, maria Pia Lara, Lewis R. Gordon, Simona Forti, Nickolas Pappas, Nelson Maldonado Torres, Alice Crary, Francey Russell, Emmanuel Coccia, and talks by eminent social scientists confronting their philosophical mindset like Andreas Kalyvas, Jack Halberstam, Bernard E. Harcourt, Ann Stoler, McKenzie Wark and Otto von Busch. You will witness Philosophy meeting Art in performances such as those by Chiara Bottici or Simon Critchley. You will enjoy unexpected site-specific artistic performances and the visual art exceptionally on display for A Night of Philosophy at The New School.
50 artists from The New School and outside The New School will contribute to A Night of philosophy at The New School. In 1969, the American conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth published “Art After Philosophy” claiming that “In this period of man, after philosophy and religion, art may possibly be one endeavor that fulfills what another age might have called “man’s spiritual needs.”50 years later, A Night of Philosophyoffers to experience “Philosophy after Art”, confronting Philosophy with the power of Art now. “Man’s spiritual needs” are not only at stake, but also woman, man, omni and transgender human’s political, social and transpecies needs.
50 philosophers will give lectures. Philosophers from The New School, philosophers “friends of The New School” or philosophers from Columbia University which was the “old school” a 100 years ago. At the time, Sociology and Social Research were the new kids on the block. What now? What’s new? Philosophers, as such, are everywhere. Philosophy is the new thing.
A Night of Philosophy is commissioned by the Festival of New, the week-long festival celebrating the Centennial of The New School in 2019
A Night of Philosophy is an event created by Mériam Korichi, stage director and philosopher, who created the first edition of A night of Philosophy in New York in 2015.
A Night of Philosophy at The New School benefits from the support and collaboration of the Goethe-Institut New York, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in New York, the contemporary art gallery Emmanuel Barbault, Farrar Straus and Giroux Publishing house, Labtonic.
