María José Alcaraz on filosofian apulaisprofessori Murcian yliopistossa. Hän väitteli tohtoriksi vuonna 2006 Arthur Danton taiteenteoriasta. Hänen tutkimuskohteisiinsa kuuluu esteettisten arvostelmien rationaalisuus, esteettisten mielipiteiden oikeutus, esteettisten ja muiden moraalisten tai kognitiivisten arvojen yhteydet, emotionaalisten reaktioiden rooli taideteosten merkityksen ymmärtämisessä ja luonnollisten ympäristöjen esteettinen arvostaminen. Tällä hetkellä hän tutkii esteettisen havaitsemisen luonnetta ja esteettisten ominaisuuksien roolia ei-esteettisten arvojen muodostamisessa.
María José Alcaraz is an assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Murcia (Spain). She got her Ph D in 2006 with a dissertation on Arthur Danto’s theory of art. Her research interests are the rationality of aesthetic judgments and the justification of aesthetic verdicts, the relationship between aesthetic and other moral or cognitive values, the role of emotional responses in understanding artworks’ meaning and the aesthetic appreciation of natural environments. She is currently working within two research projects on the nature of aesthetic perception and on the contribution of aesthetic properties to the constitution of other non-aesthetic values.
Taiteelliset ja tavalliset tunteet: taiteesta liikuttuminen
Taidetta on sekä ylistetty että arvosteltu sen kyvystä herättää emotionaalisia reaktioita katsojassa. Joillekin taide on tunteellisen hienostuneisuuden lähde, kun taas toisten mielestä se johtaa harhaan tunteellisia reaktioitamme. Tämä ristiriita on nähty olennaisena taiteen kognitiivisen arvon määrittelyssä. Esitelmässäni pyrin osoittamaan, että osalla niistä argumenteista, joita ollaan esitetty heikentääkseen taiteen kognitiivista arvoa suhteessa sen voimaan herättää emotionaalisia reaktioita, on hutera perusta. Samoin väitän, että arviointistandardit ja emotionaaliset kriteerit ovat usein taiteen arvostuksen ansiota. Lopuksi toivon osoittavani, että emotionaaliset reaktiomme tavallisiin tapahtumiin eivät lähtökohtaisesti ole episteemisesti arvokkaampia kuin reaktiomme taiteeseen.
Artistic and Ordinary Emotions: on Being Moved by Art
Art has been both praised and criticized for its capacity to provoke emotional responses in the spectator. While for some authors artworks can be a source of emotional refinement, others think art can misled us in our emotional responses. This issue, in turn, has been thought as crucial in order to determine the cognitive value of art. In this presentation, I will try to show that some of the arguments that have been offered in order to undermine art’s cognitive value in virtue of its capacity to trigger emotional responses are not well grounded. Moreover, I will try to argue that our evaluative standards and emotional criteria are often acquired through art appreciation. Finally, I hope to show that in principle our emotional responses to ordinary scenarios are not epistemically more valuable than our responses to artworks.
