Mari Lindman (s. 1980) on filosofi ja freelance-kirjoittaja. Tällä hetkellä hän kirjoittaa kirjaa työstä ja itsensä toteuttamisesta. Lindman väitteli tohtoriksi Åbo Akademista väitöskirjalla Work and Non-Work: On Work and Meaning (”Työ ja epä-työ: työstä ja merkityksestä”) vuonna 2015. Mari Lindman (1980) is a philosopher and freelance writer working on a book about work and self-realization. Lindman received the degree of PhD at Åbo Akademi with the thesis Work and Non-Work: On Work and Meaning in 2015. Lindman’s interests include political and moral philosophy.

Työn rooli meidän jokaisen elämässä on erittäin keskeinen – niin keskeinen, ettemme kenties edes huomaa kuinka hallitseva rooli on. Puheenvuorossani käsittelen hämmentävää dikotomiaaa – eräänlaista ristiriitaa – työn rooleista. Toisaalta työ ymmärretään ratkaisevana luovuuden ja itsensä toteuttamisen lähteenä. Työ liittyy itsenäisyyteen ja henkilökohtaiseen kasvuun; työ itsensä toteuttamisena on vallitseva ihanne, jota ilman on vaikea ymmärtää mitä pidämme elintavoillemme arvokkaana, mihin pyrimme ja kuinka muotoilemme elämämme. Toisaalta työ liittyy työllistymiseen ja taloudelliseen välttämättömyyteen. Suurelle osalle ihmisistä työn löytäminen ja pitäminen on elämän ensisijainen haaste. Työmarkkinoita hallitsee joustavuus, ja monilla ei ole muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin ottaa vastaan epävakaa työ. Työn ollessa ensisijainen tapa ansaita rahaa ja rahan ollessa elämämme yksi perusasioista, me emme voi valita olla tekemättä töitä. Tästä näkökulmasta kaikki työt ovat hyviä, koska ne antavat ihmisille heidän tarvitsemansa työllistymisen. Haluan tarkastella miten nämä käsitykset työstä – toinen ilmaisee vapauden ja itsenäisyyden ihanteen, kun taas toinen liittyy työhön selviämisenä ja riippuvuutena työmarkkinoiden vaihteluun – paljastavat perustavanlaatuisia jännitteitä työn merkityksen ympärillä. Nämä jännitteet voivat auttaa meitä löytämään vaihtoehtoja ja unelmia, jotta voimme katso arkea uusin silmin. Sen sijaan, että otamme työn käsitteen annettuna, voimme oppia mitä pidämme oikeasti tärkeänä toimintana.
Must I love my job? Work, employment and self-realization
Work plays an extremely central role in our lives – it is so dominant that we do not perhaps even recognize how dominant it is. I will talk about what I consider to be a puzzling dichotomy – a sort of clash – that concerns the roles work plays. On the one hand, work is understood as one of the vital sources of creativity and self-realization. Work is connected with independence and personal development; work as self-realization is a dominant ideal without which it is hard to understand what is seen as meaningful for how we live, what we strive for and how we shape our lives. On the other hand, work is connected with employment and economic necessity. For an increasingly great amount of people, to find and keep a job is one of the primary challenges in life. The labor market is ruled by flexibility and people are forced to accept precarious positions. As work is the primary way of earning money, and money is a fundament of our daily life, we have no choice, we must work. From this point of view, all jobs are good because they provide people with much-needed employment. I want to look at how these images of work – one expresses an ideal of freedom and independence, whereas the other is associated with work as precarious survival and dependence on the fluctuations of the labor market – reveal fundamental tensions surrounding the meaning of work. These tensions can help us articulate alternatives and dreams – to look anew at everyday life. Instead of taking work and wage labor for granted, we can learn to articulate what we see as truly important pursuits.
