Leila Haaparanta on Tampereen yliopiston filosofian professori ja Helsingin yliopiston dosentti. Hän on julkaissut artikkeleita muun muassa logiikan historiasta, 1900-luvun alun analyyttisestä filosofiasta ja fenomenologiasta, epistemologiasta, mielen ja kielen filosofiasta, uskonnonfilosofiasta ja pragmatismista.
Leila Haaparanta is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tampere and Docent at the University of Helsinki, where she took her Ph.D degree in 1985. Previous posts include research and teaching positions at the University of Helsinki and at the Academy of Finland. She is the author of Frege’s Doctrine of Being (Acta Philosophica Fennica, 1985) and the editor of Mind, Meaning and Mathematics (Kluwer, 1994), The Development of Modern Logic (Oxford, 2009), and Rearticulations of Reason (Acta Philosophica Fennica, 2010). Her co-edited works include Frege Synthesized (with J. Hintikka, Reidel, 1986), Analytic Philosophy in Finland (with I. Niiniluoto, Rodopi, 2003), and Categories of Being: Essays on Metaphysics and Logic (with H.J. Koskinen, Oxford, 2012). She has published articles on the history of logic, early twentieth century analytic philosophy and phenomenology, epistemology, philosophy of mind and language, philosophy of religion, and pragmatism. She has led research projects on the history of logic, on twentieth century philosophy, on metaphysics, and on rationality. She was a member of the Steering Committee of the European Society for Analytic Philosophy 2007 – 2011. She is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, and of Academia Europaea.

Elämme puheen ja kirjoituksen täyttämässä maailmassa, arkisissa kohtaamisissa, sosiaalisessa mediassa, tieteessä ja taiteessakin. Emme ainoastaan tuota ja ota vastaan sanoja, vaan myös väitämme, esitämme sanottavamme totena, ja arvioimme toisten väitteitä. Tämä esitelmä johdattelee kielifilosofian, tieto-opin ja etiikan käsitteiden avulla pohtimaan, mitä saa väittää, milloin pitää puhua ja milloin on syytä vaieta.
What Are We Allowed to Assert? The Ethics of Speech and Silence
We live in a world filled with speech and writing – everyday encounters, social media, science and even art. Not only do we produce and take in language, but we also argue, assert, and assess claims of others. Using concepts from the philosophy of language, ethics and epistemology, this presentation invites its audience to wonder what is allowed to be claimed, when we should speak up and when we should stay silent.
