Ilkka Niiniluodolla on pitkä akateeminen ura Helsingin yliopistossa: hän on ollut yliopiston filosofian maisteri sovelletussa matematiikassa (1968), filosofian tohtori (1974), matematiikan apulaisprofessori (1973–1977), teoreettisen filosofian professori (1977–2014), rehtori (2003–2008) ja kansleri (2008–2013). Hän on ollut Suomen Filosofisen Yhdistyksen puheenjohtaja vuosina 1975–2015 ja Acta Philosophica Fennican päätoimittaja vuodesta 1980. Niiniluoto on tutkinut filosofista logiikkaa, tieteenfilosofiaa, epistemologiaa, teknologian filosofiaa ja kulttuurin filosofiaa. Hänen pääteoksiin kuuluu Is Science Progressive? (”Edistyykö tiede?”; D. Reidel, 1984), Truthlikeness (”Totuudenkaltaisuus”; D. Reidel, 1987) ja Critical Scientific Realism (”Kriittinen tieteellinen realismi”; Oxford University Press, 1999).
Ilkka Niiniluoto has made his academic career at the University of Helsinki: Master of Science in applied mathematics (1968), Doctor of Philosophy (1974), Associate Professor of Mathematics (Logic and Foundations) (1973-1977), Professor of Theoretical Philosophy (1977-2014), Rector (2003-2008), and Chancellor (2008-2013). He has been the President of the Philosophical Society of Finland in 1975-2015 and the editor-in-chief of Acta Philosophica Fennica since 1980. Niiniluoto has worked in philosophical logic, philosophy of science, epistemology, philosophy of technology, and philosophy of culture. His main works include Is Science Progressive? (D. Reidel, 1984), Truthlikeness (D. Reidel, 1987), and Critical Scientific Realism (Oxford University Press, 1999, paperback 2002).
Onko edistys vain myytti?
Modernia aikaa on hallinnut usko ihmiskunnan taloudelliseen ja poliittiseen edistymiseen, jonka vauhdittajina ovat valistuneen järjen luovaan käyttöön perustuvat uudet tekniset ja tieteelliset keksinnöt sekä yhteiskunnan hyvinvoinnin ja oikeudenmukaisuuden vahvistaminen. Vuosituhannen taitteessa tämä optimismi kuitenkin asetettiin monin tavoin kyseenalaiseksi. Viileää kulttuuripessimismiä edustanut suomalainen filosofi Georg Henrik von Wright (1916-2003), joka ei itse tuntenut nostalgiaa esimoderniin uskonnollisuuteen eikä houkutusta postmoderniin nihilismiin, arvioi edistyksen olevan pelkkä myytti. Viisaan akateemikon näkemys onkin saanut tukea viime vuosien taloudellisista ja sosiaalisista kriiseistä. Mutta vaikka edistys ei olekaan jatkuva ja välttämätön prosessi, voimme edelleen arvokeskustelun kautta muotoilla yhteiskunnalliselle edistymiselle kriteerejä, jotka antavat pohjaa taistelulle paremman maailman puolesta.
Is Progress Only a Myth?
Belief in the progress of politics and economics of humankind has dominated the modern age. The catalysts of progress are said to be the new technical and scientific inventions born from the creative application of the enlightened rationality, the reinforcement of justice and the greater well-being of society. However, at the turn of the new millennium, optimism towards progress was questioned in many ways. The Finnish philosopher Georg Henrik von Wright (1916–2003), a proponent of a certain cool cultural pessimism that touched neither the nostalgia of the pre-modern piety or the attraction to postmodern nihilism, figured that progress is only a myth. This view has gained some support in light of the economic and social crises of recent years. Even though progress is not a continual or necessary process, we can, through deliberation of values, formulate criteria for societal progress that ground our fight for a better world.
