Giuliano Torrengo on filosofian apulaisprofessori ja Centre for Philosophy of Time (CPT) -keskuksen perustaja Milanon yliopistossa. Tällä hetkellä hän koordinoi CPT:n TEMP-FRAME-hanketta. Hankkeen päätavoite on luoda yhteinen verkosto erilaisille ajan ymmärtämisen lähestymistavoille. Tätä varten hän myös työstää tutkimusryhmänsä kanssa TIME-MEHODS-osahanketta, joka pyrkii yhdistelemään filosofian eri osa-alueita. TEMP-FRAME-hankkeen tavoitteena on laajentaa verkostoa lopulta myös filosofian ulkopuolelle. Torrengo on julkaissut kaksi kirjaa ja monta artikkelia muun muassa Synthese-, Analysis, Philosophical Studies- ja Journal of Philosophy -julkaisuissa.
Giuliano Torrengo is the founder and coordinator of theCentre for Philosophy of Time (CPT) at the Department of Philosophy, University of Milan, where he is assistant professor. He is currently coordinating the TEMP-FRAME project at the CPT. The main aim of the project is creating a network between different approaches to our understating of time. To this effect, he is working together with his team on the work-package TIME-METHODS, which is focused on the interconnection between different areas of philosophy (metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language). TEMP-FRAMES aims at expanding the network to disciplines outside philosophy too. He published two books, and several articles in Synthese, Analysis, Philosophical Studies, Journal of Philosophy and other international journals.
Aika, filosofia ja science fiction
Aika on aina hämmentänyt ihmismieltä. Ei siis ole ihmekään, että länsimaisessa filosofiassa (ja toki muissa traditioissa) ajan luonteen pohdinnalla on ollut jatkuva (vaikkei aina keskeinen) rooli. Ajan mysteereillä on kuitenkin ollut laaja vaikutus myös taiteelliseen tuotantoon vuosisatojen saatossa. Mitä tulee aikaan liittyviin kysymyksiin, science fiction (tieteisfiktio, scifi) vaikuttaa soveltuvan erityisen hyvin dialogiin filosofian kanssa. Aivan kuten filosofit ovat ryhtyneet ”ajatusleikkeihin” testatakseen keskeisiä intuitioitamme ajasta, scifi-kirjailijat ovat tutkineet potentiaalisia narratiiveja aikamatkailusta, ajallisista hallusinaatioista ja tila-ajallisista vääristymistä. Esitelmässäni pohdin, onko filosofian ja scifin lähestymistapojen yhteys vain pinnallinen, vai voisiko se olla syvällä kognitiivisissa ja emotionaalisissa malleissamme.
Time, philosophy, and science fiction
Time has always baffled the human mind. Thus, it is no surprise that in western philosophy (and indeed in many other traditions of thought as well) the reflection on the nature of time has played a constant (if not always central) role. But the mysteries of time have also had a wide impact on artistic production through the centuries. When it comes to time-related issue, the science fiction genre seems particularly suited to dialogue with philosophy. Indeed, as philosophers have engaged with “thought experiments” to test our core intuitions about time, science fiction writers have explored the potential of narratives involving time travel, temporal hallucinations, and spatio-temporal distortions of various kinds. In my presentation, I will tackle the question whether the connection between the philosophical and the sci-fiction approaches to time is merely superficial or it is deeply rooted in our cognitive and emotional layout.
